Regarding backup solutions: I’ve had a very nice experience using SATA RAID 0 (mirroring) with two matched hard drives. It’s more expensive, running about $300 for a setup, but it is constant live backup that even makes your computer run faster! No need to bother with finicky USB drives or software setup. Of course, with no off-site backup I have to make sure I have good surge protection.
